Personal Philosophy of Work
In considering my career, both past and future, I try to avoid conceptualizing it as work. Since I was quite young I've consistently held the opinion that if there's something you don't enjoy doing, it's generally not something worth doing. If whatever it is your doing has lost it’s fun or doesn't inspire anymore, then you should stop doing it. That being said, I must concede that there are many times where I've had to perform some unenjoyable task or work at some less than desired job; however, this was only done for some financial necessity or to improve future opportunities at receiving more interesting positions. While working to live is sometimes necessary, one should always live to work. This is not to say that your occupation should consume your life at the expense of other important facets of life (family, friends, leisure, etc.). |
I believe that everyone should strive for a good life, and a good life includes an interesting, inspiring, and passion-provoking work pursuit. I think the novelist Chuck Palahniuk captured my philosophy of work, and indeed life in general, in saying “Find joy in everything you choose to do. Every job, relationship, home… it’s your responsibility to love it, or change it” (2007). |
