Reflection On Academic Transcripts
I have to say that I'm quite proud of my academic performance. I've excelled in and enjoyed academia since I was quite young; however, it was not until my brother, Mark's, death (discussed in the My Life page) that I came to appreciate the amount of hard work and dedication required to maintain a high level of performance in the face of personal adversity.
Looking over my transcripts you can see that my grades took a precipitous drop in late 2008, recovering in early 2010. This was a very difficult period in my life during which I was struggling with the emotional, psychological, and social fallout of Mark's death. Needless to say that this was a time when my grades, or indeed education at all, were very important to me.
At the time I was enrolled in a specialist program in cell and molecular biology. Given what my family, friends, and I were experiencing at the time, biology just didn't seem to hold any relevance in my life. It wasn't until I began to enroll in a series of mental-health focused courses that I was able to rediscover my passion and drive for learning. This was material that was a reflection and explanation of my experiences with mental health problems. It was at this time that I began to give a concerted effort in studying mental health and working to bring my grades back to the level I expect of myself. My successful fight back to regain the level of academic excellence I demand of myself is one of my proudest accomplishments.
